Art Therapy

Art Therapy uses the creative process of the arts to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of people of all ages. The creative process involved in artistic self-expression facilitates the resolution of conflicts and problems, the development of people skills, behavior management, stress reduction, and self-esteem and self-awareness.

WHAT DOES ART THERAPY DO?

When words are not enough, the use of images and body movement can tell our stories. In telling our stories through art, there is the opportunity to express oneself imaginatively, authentically, and spontaneously, and over time can lead to personal fulfillment, emotional amends, and transformation. Art Therapy offers the opportunity for expression and communication and can be particularly helpful to people who find it hard to express their thoughts and feelings verbally.

WHY DOES ART THERAPY WORK?

Some of us find it difficult to verbalize our thoughts, feelings, and emotions. For example, we are too embarrassed; or we lack adequate language or cognitive skills, or we have been exposed to trauma that constricts our freedom to express ourselves verbally. Art therapy is an intervention that provides the opportunity for nonverbal expression and communication.

The Art Therapy environment provides a supportive venue in which to safely express and explore strong, sensitive, or destructive feelings.

By expressing your feelings, even if you cannot identify or label your emotions, we will have a starting point from which to address your issues.
